While you’re sure to change your mind about your interior decor ideas or decide that your house needs a bit of a makeover from time to time, generally speaking if you’re happy with your home then you’re probably happy with your life!
At least, that’s according to a new study carried out by Kingfisher, The Happiness Research Institute and B&Q, revealing that our houses are actually significantly more important to our happiness levels than either our income or our job.
It was found that 73 per cent of those happy with their homes are also happy with their lives, with our houses making up 15 per cent of our total happiness – so they’re as important as our general health and fitness, at 14 per cent.
Salaries came in at six per cent and our jobs at three per cent… but concerningly, 25 per cent of Brits admit that they’re not happy with their homes.
In all, there are five emotional needs that decide how happy we are with where we live: a feeling of spaciousness, feeling able to make changes to the property (whether we own or rent), pride, identity and safety. When our houses fall sort with regards to these, it has a negative impact on our wellbeing.
So if you have been feeling a little bit blue of late and can’t work out why, what about taking a look around your property to see if there’s anything you can do that might lift your mood? It could well be that new lacquered doors are just what you need to give your home – and you – that all-important sparkle back.
